Sylvotherapy? What is it?It is better known as forest bathing. Being in a forest or near plants is only part of the process. It is a sensory experience that teaches us to use all our senses to experience nature. The positive physical influences on our bodies are well documented. We breathe better-quality air in a forest than in the city. We are impacted by the smells of the forest and the sounds-especially the absence of noise. The colors in the forest are soothing. Trees and plants have energy that influences their surroundings and those within the area. All these factors can lower stress, heart rate, and blood pressure, and improve breathing. Engaging consciously with the forest as a whole, or a specific tree, has spiritual benefits. As a child, my safe space was always in a tree. Being intentionally present with non-human beings is a spiritual practice. Every religion has references to trees. Buddha sat at the base of a tree. Different trees have different meanings to different cultures throughout history.
In a world that treats stress and anxiety with pharmaceuticals, sylvotherapy is a natural and cost-effective choice. It does not interfere with, but supports, other therapy modalities.A sylvotherapist guides you to mindfully engage with the forest in ways that support your goals and needs.
